Nebbiolo is native to Piedmont in northwestern Italy. It is one of the most distinctive and remarkable red grape varieties from this region.

I. Origin and Etymology of the Name

Place of Origin: Nebbiolo comes from Piedmont in northwestern Italy, specifically the Langhe region. The climate and soil of this terroir provide ideal conditions for its cultivation.
Origin of the Name: Its name derives from the Italian word nebbia, meaning “fog.” The Nebbiolo harvest generally takes place in October, when mists are frequent in the Piedmontese Langhe. Another theory holds that the name comes from the fine whitish bloom that covers the berries at maturity, resembling a light haze — hence its nickname “grape of the fog.”

II. Grape Characteristics and History

Characteristics: Nebbiolo is an early-budding but late-ripening grape variety with low yields. Its berries are small, with thin but firm skins, giving it good resistance to frost and disease. Nevertheless, it requires sufficient warmth to reach full maturity; vines planted on south-facing slopes therefore produce higher-quality grapes. Wines from Nebbiolo reveal aromas of rose, violet, red cherry, plum, truffle, and nuts, combined with notes of tar. They are distinguished by powerful tannins and a bright, frank acidity.
History: Nebbiolo cultivation began in the Valtellina, where it has been grown deliberately since the 14th century. A public regulation issued in La Morra in 1431 attests to the high value placed on this grape for centuries: severe penalties, including hanging, were imposed on anyone who illegally cut down Nebbiolo vines. Its first formal mention dates from the 19th century. In the 1950s, the Italian industrial revolution led to the decline of agriculture and a reduction in vineyard area, with Nebbiolo acreage also shrinking.

III. Principal Terroirs and Iconic Wines

Barolo and Barbaresco: Nebbiolo is the sole grape used to produce Barolo, nicknamed the “King of Wines,” and Barbaresco, called the “Queen of Wines” of Italy. These two famous appellations are located in the Langhe hills of Piedmont, world-renowned for their Nebbiolo wines. These crus possess excellent aging potential and a complex aromatic palette.
Other Terroirs: Beyond Barolo and Barbaresco, Nebbiolo is also grown in other Piedmont areas such as Roero, Gattinara, and Ghemme. The wines produced there have their own characteristics but are generally less powerful and complex than those of Barolo and Barbaresco.

IV. Grape Identification and Tasting Profile

Grape Identification: Nebbiolo’s young shoots are green or yellow-green, and young leaves show red reflections at the edges. Adult leaves are small, cordate or rounded, with a flat surface and sparse down on the underside. Clusters are medium-sized, conical or cylindrical, with very tightly packed berries. The berry skins are thick and blue-black.
Tasting Profile: Nebbiolo wine displays a dark ruby color that evolves toward brick or russet with aging. Its bouquet is complex and evolving, combining aromas of rose, violet, red cherry, plum, truffle, nuts, and tar. On the palate, tannins are powerful, acidity is bright, and the overall structure is dense with remarkable balance.
