Château Mouton Rothschild, a Premier Grand Cru Classé since 1973, is located in the Pauillac appellation. Unique in the history of the 1855 Classification, it is the only château ever to have been promoted after the original ranking.
A Remarkable History
- The estate was acquired in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, who renamed it Château Mouton Rothschild.
- In 1922, Baron Philippe de Rothschild took the reins at just 20 years old and radically transformed the estate.
- His greatest achievement: securing Mouton’s promotion to Premier Grand Cru Classé status in 1973, the only change in the history of the 1855 Classification. His motto: “Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change” (First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change).
Art in the Service of Wine
- Since 1945, every vintage has featured a label illustrated by a renowned artist: Chagall, Picasso, Dalí, Warhol, Bacon, Miquel Barceló, among others.
- These artist labels make each bottle a work of art in its own right, highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
Vineyard and Winemaking
- 84 hectares of vines on deep gravel soils, planted with 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot.
- Vinification in oak vats and aging 100% in new French oak barrels for 20–22 months.
- The Mouton style is opulent and generous, with aromas of cassis, cedar, exotic spices, and roasted coffee.
The Wines
- Château Mouton Rothschild (Grand Vin): Powerful, exotic, and opulent, it is one of the most flamboyant wines of Pauillac.
- Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild: The second wine, introduced in 1993, more approachable yet faithful to the house style.
- Aile d’Argent: The estate’s dry white wine, a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle.
